You can pay for ChatGPT as an individual (Plus), as a small team (Team, which OpenAI's help pages now call Business), or — at a larger scale — as a business (Enterprise). The choice matters more than people realize, mostly for two reasons: data handling (whether your conversations are used in training) and collaboration (shared workspaces and the AI tools you share inside them).

The marketing pages don't explain the trade-offs cleanly. Here's the honest comparison: features, privacy, pricing dynamics, and who each plan is actually for.

• You have collaborators. Even just one. Workspaces let you share chats and plugins deliberately.
• You handle anything sensitive. Business data, customer info, anything you'd be uncomfortable having a hand in training future models — Team's default privacy posture is friendlier.

• You want centralized billing (one card, all users).
• You're building shared AI workflows as a small team. Personal plans can no longer create new custom GPTs, while workspace members can share plugins with each other.

OpenAI's retirement and migration FAQ says custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026 across all plans, or February 11, 2027 for Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral. After that date, the GPTs and their pages become inaccessible, while past conversations with them stay available. Personal accounts, Plus included, can already no longer create or publish new GPTs. Workspace users can still create them until retirement where their settings allow it.

The replacement is plugins. A GPT's instructions become a skill and its knowledge files are copied over when you migrate it; custom actions and the selected model are not carried over. According to OpenAI's Plugins in ChatGPT page, the plugin directory is available across plans, and users in Team (Business) and Enterprise workspaces can share plugins with other members. A plugin published to the workspace directory stays inside the workspace and is not made public.

For internal team workflows, that is the part that matters: the CRM-update assistant, the support-reply assistant and the blog-outline assistant you once built as shared GPTs can live on as workspace plugins. On a personal plan, there is no equivalent way to share them with colleagues.

What Team (Business) is not

• Not a guarantee against data loss. No tier removes the need for good security practices and not pasting truly sensitive data into AI tools.
• Not a substitute for API for production workloads. If you're embedding AI into a product, the API has different pricing and SLA dynamics.
• Not a magic compliance solution. For regulated industries, you may still need Enterprise + specific contractual terms.
